His first position out of college was with a company called Rank, Taylor Hobson. However, just a few years later in 1966 Fred, Christine, and their young son Mark emigrated from England to the United States (more specifically Massachusetts). Fred was recruited by a rapidly growing firm called Itek, a US defense contractor that specialized in camera systems for spy satellites. Fred,an optical engineer by trade, came to the United States during what was then called the British “brain drain,” an era when many engineers and scientists emigrated to the United States.
